Recognizing Gum Disease: A Dentist’s Perspective on Prevention and Early Detection
by Dr. John Zalesky
As a practicing dentist here in Aurora, I’ve seen firsthand how gum disease can quietly take hold of a patient’s oral health. Often called a “silent” condition, gum disease doesn’t always cause pain in its early stages—which is precisely why it’s so important to know what to look for and how to prevent it.

Recognizing Gum Disease: A Dentist’s Perspective on Prevention and Early Detection
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, begins when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, is allowed to build up along and under the gumline. If not removed through regular brushing and flossing, this plaque hardens into tartar and starts to irritate the surrounding gum tissue. Early on, this irritation causes the gums to become inflamed and tender. Patients may notice that their gums bleed when they brush or floss, or that their gums appear red and swollen instead of a healthy pink. These subtle changes are often overlooked or dismissed, but they are the body's early warning signs that something isn’t right.
Another telltale sign I often hear about in my office is persistent bad breath. When bacteria accumulate around the gums, they release toxins that can lead to a chronic, unpleasant odor—even after brushing. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s an indicator that bacteria are thriving in the mouth and potentially compromising gum health.
As gum disease progresses, the symptoms become more pronounced. Gums may begin to recede, pulling away from the teeth and making them appear longer. This recession not only affects the appearance of your smile, but it also creates pockets where more bacteria can collect, further accelerating the disease. In more advanced stages, patients may feel their teeth loosening or notice a change in their bite. These changes can signal that the bone supporting the teeth is deteriorating—a serious complication that, left untreated, can result in tooth loss.
The good news is that gum disease is largely preventable with consistent, at-home care and regular dental visits. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day are your first lines of defense. These simple habits remove the plaque that leads to inflammation before it can do lasting harm. But even the most diligent brusher can’t remove all plaque buildup, especially below the gumline. That’s where routine professional cleanings come in. During these visits, we not only remove tartar, but we also examine the gums for any early signs of disease—often catching issues long before they become serious.
Lifestyle choices also play a significant role. Smoking, for example, is one of the strongest risk factors for gum disease. It impairs blood flow to the gums, making it harder for your body to fight off infection and for your gums to heal. A diet rich in vitamins C and D, along with other essential nutrients, helps support gum tissue and strengthen your body’s immune response.
If I could offer one piece of advice to every patient in Aurora and beyond, it would be this: don’t wait for pain to signal a problem. Gum disease is one of those conditions where early action truly makes all the difference. Pay attention to the small changes, stay consistent with your oral hygiene, and don’t skip your dental checkups. By taking these simple steps, you can protect not only your smile but also your long-term health and confidence.
