Is Your Roof Protecting Your Home? Signs It’s Time for a Replacement

Your roof is one of the most critical components of your home, shielding you from the elements and preserving your property’s value. However, like any part of your house, it doesn’t last forever. Recognizing the signs of wear and damage early can save you from costly repairs and potential structural issues.

    Key Warning Signs

    1. Aging Roof: Most roofs are designed to last between 20 and 25 years, depending on the materials used and the climate. If your roof is nearing this age, it’s wise to schedule a professional evaluation to determine its condition.

    2. Shingle Damage: Over time, shingles can become cracked, curled, or completely missing. A few isolated issues may be repairable, but widespread deterioration is a strong indicator that replacement is necessary.

    3. Persistent Leaks and Water Damage: If you notice stains on your ceiling or walls, peeling paint, or mold growth, water may be seeping through your roof. Even small leaks can escalate into major problems if left unaddressed.

    4. Sagging Areas: A sagging roof can indicate structural weakness, often due to prolonged moisture damage. This is a serious issue that should be addressed immediately to prevent further deterioration.

    5. Excessive Granules in Gutters: Asphalt shingles shed granules as they age. Finding an excessive amount in your gutters is a sign that your shingles are breaking down and losing their protective coating.

Take Action Before It’s Too Late

A failing roof doesn’t just compromise your home’s protection—it can also lower your property’s value and increase energy costs. Regular inspections and proactive maintenance can help extend your roof’s lifespan, but if you’re noticing multiple warning signs, it’s time to consider a replacement. Consulting a professional roofer will ensure your home remains safe, secure, and well-protected for years to come.

Simple modifications can improve mobility and ease of movement. Installing ramps, widening doorways, and using smart home technology help create a space where every corner feels reachable. “The goal is to ensure a life without limitations,” says Leslie.

Many household accidents, especially falls, are preventable with the right precautions. “Securing rugs, improving lighting, and installing grab bars in key areas are simple but effective safety measures,” says Russ. These small changes provide peace of mind and reduce risks for both seniors and their families.

A well-designed home isn’t just safe—it should also be inviting and functional. Thoughtful furniture arrangements, supportive seating, and calming spaces contribute to both physical ease and emotional well-being. “A home should be a haven of comfort,” says Leslie.

The kitchen, often the center of daily life, can present safety challenges. Keeping heavy items at waist level, reducing clutter, and maintaining clear pathways help prevent accidents. “Familiarizing yourself with basic first aid can also make a difference in handling minor mishaps,” adds Russ.

  • The Legacy of David St. Aubin

What do migrants in Paw Paw, high schoolers in Flint, and native Iraqis and Afghans in the Middle East have in common? They’ve all been taught by Veteran and educator David St. Aubin. “It started with my parents, who helped me become who I was in terms of serving others,” David says, remembering their teachings. This thirst for sharing knowledge has been integral and incessant in David’s life, regardless of his age, position, or location. While living in Paw Paw, Michigan, David became

We tried to change that. We would offer for the kids to attend school in the summertime, even though it was picking season.” Despite knowing little Spanish, David was able to teach these young children for three summers and found great value in working with them.  “My career has been about me serving others,” he says in reflection. “It’s been my whole life.” An unexpected turn occurred during David’s undergraduate years. “It was my sophomore year in college at Western Michigan University when something kind of hit me,” David says, “and I wanted to do something for my country. If you'd asked me in high school, are you going to go into the military? I would probably have told you no. No one in my family was military except for my great-great-grandfather who was in the Civil War.” He decided to join the ROTC and stayed in for two years. Following graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. When completing his service, he became a reserve officer. He has been awarded two prestigious Bronze Star medals for his combat operations and actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Busy” was not the word for David’s life as an Army Reservist and an educator though “hectic” might have been. He was married, having two children, teaching, coaching, training officers, and working towards a master’s degree. David’s

His wife would bring him lunch, knowing it was the only moment they’d see each other. He says fervently about the experience, “I will never do that again!” While the hours and distance had challenges, David’s role as a principal allowed him to bring significant programming to his students. One example of a successful endeavor was with Michigan State police officer Christopher Webb. Students in an internship program experienced real life scenarios and hands-on opportunities which ultimately guided their career choices. It led to officer Webb becoming a State police officer. David was a high school principal for twenty one years and had a reputation as someone who genuinely cared about the students and staff.  The military took David out of his principal job many times, but three that were significant.  In the early 2000’s while at Lakeville High School, he was assigned to a mission lasting a month in South Korea. The role involved tracking military police operations in the peninsula. In 2008-2009, he was deployed again to serve in the Iraq War (Operation Iraqi Freedom) for a year-long tour which involved training and deploying with the Iraqi Federal Police at Al Numaniyah Training Center and serving as the Deputy Director for ITAM (Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission). In 2011-2012, David volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  For a year he served with the Tenth Mountain and 82nd Airborne Divisions, communicating combat operations to American Marine units fighting in the same Helmand Province in Afghanistan.  David never wavered in answering the call of his country. The influence that David has gathered from his nearly twenty-eight years in the military and lifetime of dedication as a teacher and administrator is boundless. He recalls seeing a former student in the Baghdad airport, who hollered “Hey, Mr.St. Aubin”.  While David was happy to see his former student, he remarked that it was not a total surprise.  “I have run into students on vacation, in remote bars, and even in Afghanistan and Iraq.  It's like I can't go anywhere,” he laughs. The recognition he receives indicates far more than others remembering him, but the reality that they respect and revere him. David himself is like the great country we live in: resolute, devoted to excellence, and full of true thankfulness for the opportunities that life here presents. David concluded with emotion and gratitude, “We live in the best country in the world, and you should never take that for granted.”

When it comes to honoring those who have fought for our cherished freedoms, there’s a special place in Traverse City, Michigan, that

stands tall, just like its honored guests. The Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, a non-profit organization, has made it their mission to ensure that every Michigan veteran is given an all-expenses paid trip to Washington DC to visit the memorials dedicated to their valorous service and sacrifice for the nation. The roots of this noble mission run deep and, fittingly, they blossomed in the heart of the Michigan first. Back in 2014, the very first year of its existence, Mid-Michigan Honor Flight formed a partnership with Traverse City and kicked off its second voyage out of Cherry Capital Airport. The scale of the operation is as inspiring as the cause itself. With over 1000 veterans on their waiting list and around 400 volunteers - who give their time as 'general guardians' to accompany these stalwart individuals - the task is monumental, and yet it runs with seamless dedication. Of these many volunteers, approximately 60 to 70 hail from the Traverse City area, showing their unflagging commitment and support to the heroes amongst us. Traverse City's choices to work with Mid-Michigan Honor Flight continues to reflect the community's deep-seated respect and gratitude for the sacrifices veterans have made. Incorporating native plants into your landscaping is one of the best ways to create a beautiful, sustainable, and low-maintenance outdoor space. Native plants are naturally adapted to the local climate, soil, and wildlife, offering numerous environmental and practical benefits.
    Why Choose Native Plants?
Low Maintenance: Because they are suited to local conditions, native plants require less watering, fertilizing, and upkeep compared to non-native species.
Drought and Pest Resistance: Native species are more resilient to regional weather patterns and pests, reducing the need for pesticides and excessive watering.
Supports Local Wildlife: Native plants provide essential food and shelter for pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects, helping maintain a balanced ecosystem.
Prevents Invasive Species Issues: Non-native plants can become invasive, spreading aggressively and outcompeting native species, which disrupts local habitats.
Improves Soil Health: Many native plants have deep root systems that prevent soil erosion, improve water filtration, and contribute to healthier soil over time.
    How to Incorporate Native Plants
Research plants that thrive in your region and suit your yard’s sunlight and soil conditions.
Choose a mix of flowers, shrubs, and trees to create a diverse and visually appealing landscape.
Consider replacing traditional lawns with native ground covers for a more sustainable alternative.
By using native plants, you create a beautiful, eco-friendly landscape that benefits both your home and the environment. With less maintenance and more resilience, native landscaping is a smart and rewarding choice for any homeowner.

Why Seafood Tastes Better When It’s Treated Simply

In a culinary world awash with complex recipes and elaborate presentations, there remains an undeniable truth: the best seafood thrives under the philosophy of simplicity. This seemingly modest approach to preparation is deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions, where the inherent flavors of the sea are allowed to speak for themselves, needing only a nudge rather than a transformation.

Fresh seafood carries the delicate notes of its marine origin—a briny whisper of the ocean, a mild sweetness that reflects its natural environment, the subtle textures that differentiate one species from another. It’s this maritime tapestry of taste that demands nothing more than finesse in its culinary handling. A dash of citrus, a drizzle of high-quality olive oil, or a touch of heat to add just a bit of char—these are the modest companions that elevate the innate flavors of seafood without masking them.

A heavy sauce, in contrast, can overwhelm the delicate attributes of fish and shellfish, often obscuring the very essence that makes seafood so desirable. The approach of using simple preparation methods is less about doing less and more about showcasing more—the more of the seafood’s character, flavor, and texture. When seafood is fresh and of high quality, less is indeed more.

Furthermore, cooking seafood simply not only respects the ingredient but also respects the area from where it was sourced. Coastal communities around the world have long honored their aquatic harvests by using recipes that highlight rather than hide. This philosophy is about connection; to the sea, to tradition, and to the authentic flavor that only nature can provide.

Preparing seafood with simplicity is an art that embraces minimal intervention. It reflects an understanding that the ocean’s bounty offers an unmatched culinary experience. For those who truly love and appreciate seafood, simple treatment is the purest form of culinary respect.

When It's Time to Talk: Signs a Loved One May Need Assisted Living

Recognizing when a loved one might need additional support is never easy. For many families, the idea of assisted living brings a mix of emotions—but it’s important to know that this step doesn’t represent a loss of independence, but rather a pathway to safety, community, and a higher quality of life.

Often, the signs begin subtly. You might notice unopened mail piling up, missed medications, or a decline in personal hygiene. Forgetfulness can move beyond occasional slip-ups and begin affecting daily safety—like leaving the stove on or misplacing important items. These changes may point to cognitive decline or increased vulnerability.

Mobility challenges are also key indicators. Frequent falls, bruises, or a hesitation to engage in once-enjoyed activities may mean your loved one is struggling more than they let on. Social withdrawal is another red flag. Isolation can lead to depression, loneliness, and even physical decline, especially if it’s harder for them to get out or keep in touch with friends.

If maintaining the home has become overwhelming—laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping—it might be time to reassess their environment. Assisted living communities provide peace of mind by offering help with daily tasks, medication management, nutritious meals, and 24/7 support, while still encouraging independence.

Most importantly, listen. Sometimes the person in question may express feelings of fear, loneliness, or frustration—these can be invitations to open a supportive conversation about next steps.

Transitioning to assisted living is a significant decision, but it can also be the beginning of a new, enriched chapter. If you’re seeing these signs, know you’re not alone—and that asking questions is the first step toward compassionate, informed choices.
