How to Intervene When Someone Is Too Intoxicated to Drive
Max Shek
Watching a friend or loved one drink too much and attempt to drive is a difficult situation, but stepping in could save their life—and others on the road. It’s crucial to act calmly, confidently, and without escalating tension.
First, remain non-confrontational. An intoxicated person may not recognize how impaired they are. Instead of arguing, express concern: “I care about you, and I don’t want anything bad to happen.” A personal, emotional appeal is often more effective than logic.
Offer an alternative. Suggest calling a ride, using public transportation, or having them stay the night. If they resist, try to make it feel like a choice rather than a demand: “Let’s grab a ride together and pick up your car in the morning.”
If they refuse to hand over their keys, get others involved. A group approach can be more persuasive, and friends may have better influence. If necessary, discreetly take their keys before they get behind the wheel.
As a last resort, call law enforcement if they insist on driving. It’s a difficult decision, but it could prevent a tragedy.
"One moment of intervention can prevent a lifetime of regret." Taking action in these situations isn’t easy, but it’s always the right thing to do.
