What Causes Low Water Pressure in a Home?
Tony Kind
Low water pressure can make everyday tasks frustrating, from showering to washing dishes. The cause may be limited to one fixture, or it may affect the entire plumbing system. Identifying where the problem occurs is often the first step toward understanding what is wrong.
When low water pressure affects only one faucet or showerhead, the fixture itself may be clogged. Mineral deposits and sediment can collect inside aerators and showerheads over time. A partially closed shutoff valve beneath a sink can also reduce water flow at one fixture.
Problems affecting several fixtures may point to a larger plumbing issue. One common cause is a partially closed main water shutoff valve. If the valve was recently adjusted during plumbing work, it may not have been fully reopened afterward.
A home may also have a pressure-reducing valve, sometimes called a pressure regulator. This device controls the pressure entering the plumbing system from the municipal water supply. When a pressure regulator begins to fail, homeowners may notice unusually weak pressure or pressure that changes without warning.
A sudden drop in water pressure throughout the house can be an important sign of a leak, valve problem, or water supply issue.
Leaks are another possible cause of low water pressure throughout a home. When water escapes from a damaged pipe, less reaches faucets, showers, and appliances. Some leaks are easy to notice, while others may be hidden behind walls, beneath floors, or underground.
Older plumbing can also gradually restrict water flow. Galvanized steel pipes, which are found in some older homes, may corrode internally over many years. As rust and mineral buildup narrow the inside of the pipe, water pressure can slowly become weaker.
A sudden change in water pressure may also come from outside the home. Municipal water main repairs, nearby construction, or temporary water system problems can reduce supply pressure. If neighboring homes experience the same issue, the cause may involve the local water utility rather than the home's plumbing.
Homes with private wells have additional possible causes. A failing well pump, pressure tank problem, clogged filter, or incorrect pressure switch setting can reduce household water pressure. In these systems, pressure may also rise and fall more noticeably as equipment wears.
The pattern of the pressure problem often provides useful clues. Low pressure at one fixture usually suggests a localized restriction. Low pressure throughout the entire house is more likely connected to the main supply, pressure regulator, piping, leak, or water source.
It also helps to know whether the problem appeared suddenly or developed over several months. Sudden changes are more likely to involve a failed component, a leak, a valve adjustment, or a temporary supply issue. Gradual pressure loss may suggest corrosion, mineral buildup, or aging plumbing.
Water pressure can vary somewhat from one home to another, but you shouldn't ignore a major change. Understanding when and where the pressure changed can help narrow down the likely cause. From clogged fixtures to damaged pipes and supply problems, low water pressure usually has an identifiable source.
